Ways you can ensure your web site is optimised:
Meta Tags - are descriptive words that relate to the sites content embedded in the HTML programming. These were one of the only ways of cataloguing your site and it's still a good place to start.
CSS - have the same end result in defining the styling of text and layout and colour. CSS style sheets are superior for optimisation controlling text, colours and layout in a very efficient way that saves bandwidth.
Header Tags - define the title of each web page, similar to a new chapter in a book. Clear tags make it easier for a SE to find relevant content within the site.
Page Titles - This the title of the site in the top of the browser window (the top of the internet explorer page), and is also referenced by some Search Engines.
Site content - The Search engines actually search each page on your site for a 'good match' so clear, descriptive HTML, content works well.
Use of frames - Frames are bad! No need to know too much about this, just ask your web developer if they have used frames in your site, if they have and your site is less than 2 years old, bop them on the head. Search engines get confused and it is a very 'yesterday' way to develop sites.
Robots - We spoke of Spiders earlier, they are the tool used to classify sites, well the Roberts point the Spiders (yes we are getting a feeling for the types of people developing these terms!), at the content in your site that you want to relate to the user searching. This means when the user types a term into the web site, there is a better chance at a good match and your link returning as a result.
